Senior Chief Champiti of Ntcheu District has commended Road Authority for expanding the M1 section and constructing accident black spots at Kampepuza Market to reduce accidents.
In an interview on Wednesday, he recalled the 2020 tragedy where a freightliner truck rammed into people plying trade along the road and killed 23 of them.
Champiti said Kampepuza Market has always been known for frequent road accidents which have claimed lives of many productive citizens in the area.
He said: “The expansion and installation of streetlights and introduction of humps is a good move that will make the market safe.
“While the government has made such tremendous efforts, my appeal to all people who conduct business at the market is to always observe and adhere to road signs.”
Ntcheu Police Station spokesperson Jacob Khembo said the expansion will end road accidents at the market.
“The market has not registered any accidents and the same applies at Tsangano Turn Off where the same has been implemented,” he said.
Ntcheu district commissioner George Ngaiyaye said the project sought to provide more space for parking of vehicles for people to buy commodities.
“There is a lot to be done to realise the goal because businesspeople are still doing businesses along the road. More engagement meetings are required to make market users desist from vending along the road,” he said.
