Nyika Media Club in afforestation drive

Nyika Media Club, a grouping of Northern Region-based media practitioners, on Saturday led learners at Kalambwe Primary School in Nkhata Bay in planting about 500 trees around the school premises.

The club’s chairperson Feston Malekezo said the initiative was a continuation of the organisation’s community engagement in contributing to afforestation drive.

He said: “As journalists, we think we have a role to play in safeguarding our environment. We write a lot about degradation and climate change so we want to go beyond writing by taking action.

“We appeal to the community to look after the trees to ensure that the survival rate is enhanced.”

Malekezo thanked different partners and stakeholders for the support they rendered to the initiative.

The school’s head teacher Florida Kampira hailed the organisation for the support towards environmental conservation.

She said the roofs of most schools are blown off by wind due to lack of trees.

“We will take care of the trees by allocating each tree to a leaner,” said Kampira.

On his part, Nkhata Bay District Council director of administration and human resource James Tembo said the exercise will help to conserve the environment.

“The initiative is welcome because already we have plans to plant about 600 000 trees,” he said.

Raiply Malawi Limited, Chibuku Products Limited and other well-wishers supported the initiative
