Old Xool Reunion on the cards
Some well-known DJs in the country have organised shows dubbed Old Xool Reunion to showcase old school lifestyle and showbiz.
The first event is set for Blantyre’s popular entertainment joint RSVP on July 4 and will feature names such as Philip Kalindawalo alias Phyl Touch, Radio 2FM’s Joy Nathu, Ephraim ‘DJ E’ Nyirenda, DJ Robin and Dude The Smasher.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, one of the event’s organisers Nyirenda said they have organised the shows to showcase the foundation of entertainment that is behind the fun that today’s generation is enjoying.
“Today’s entertainment circles hardly incorporate the 80s and 90s generation…if they do, it is only two percent of the early 2000s in the clubs, parties and other gatherings. It is not enough to make them frequent the entertainment circles and even get them to enjoy as much as they did before such that they easily get bored in such places,” he said.
Nyirenda said they want to use the shows to bring back the experiences, lifestyle and the culture that was prevalent in the yesteryears.
He said: “That element of being afraid of your parents then when you asked to go out, but the adrenaline rush that came with the fun of being out and enjoying the music that you only got to listen to on radio from your favourite DJs.”
Nyirenda said they will also use the events to honour some of the DJs who have passed on and others who are still alive whose work has left a lasting impact on Malawi’s entertainment industry.
Premier Bet community manager Hamza Mgaye, whose company is sponsoring the shows, said their partnership is one way of celebrating Malawi’s radio and night life heritage.
He said: “We are looking at promoting art. DJs are most forgotten when it comes to art such that we don’t normally celebrate them as we do with musicians. But they have done a lot and their contribution to art is unmatched.”
