Over 80 golfers are expected to take part in the inaugural Mdina Golf Tournament at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) today.

The tournament will be sponsored by South Africa-based Tiwone Mdina, who runs Mdina Engineering and Business Solutions.

Mdina (L) has recently taken up golf alongside wife Bridget (R) and daughter Thembi

BSC golf captain Keta Mulwafu yesterday said all is set for the tournament.

“Attracting over 70 golfers for a start, is quite impressive. We are also excited with the prizes which are on offer,” he said.

On his part, Mdina, who for years has been a major chess sponsor, said he accepted to sponsor the competition having been swayed with the proposal that the golf committee put forward.

“It was a brilliant proposal such that I did not have to give it a second thought.

“We [also] want to give major stakeholders a platform to interact and also showcase their skills on the golf course.

“This is once off sponsorship we don’t know what the future holds,” he said.
