Fun-seekers in Lilongwe will this July have a different feel of entertainment as the city is set to host the first ever Lilongwe Summer Concert courtesy of events management firm Pa Khonde.

The company has for the past two years been running the Pa Khonde sessions which were just intimate garden sessions featuring musicians, poets and other art disciplines. But this year, the company has announced it will host the Summer Concert.

In an interview, one of Pa Khonde directors George Kalukusha said they decided to host the Summer Concert to give fun lovers a whole different feeling from the usual Pa Khonde sessions which they have become used to.

“We have previously put together intimate sessions that have mostly been sold out. We have worked with different artists such as Elie Njuchi, Lulu, Lawi and Faith Mussa. We have enjoyed being in the intimate space and we want to serve the city. We are looking at this as our chance to grow,” he said.

According to Kalukusha the first concert will take place on July 15 at Rock Gardens in Area 15 in Lilongwe.

Kalikusha: We are looking at as our chance to grow

“I think that there is room for growth in Malawi. Pa Khonde sessions is something we want to continue doing but we believe that the summer concerts allow us to do something which in the future could attract international artists.

“Our vision is to collaborate and create space for the multitude of disciplines of Malawian artists and bringing them a receptive crowd something that the whole family can enjoy,” said Kalukusha, who is also a musician.

Apart from live music performances, patrons to the Lilongwe Summer Concert will have a food and art experience. There will also be a picnic as well as a kid’s zone full of fun games and face painting.

There will also be a farmer’s market zone where there will be pavilions for exhibitions. The organisers have since unveiled Afro-beat local artist Eli Njuchi as the headline artist on the first day of the concert.

Artists that will take part during the event include Mirriam Nkosi, Mazani, Temwah and UK-based Jones.
