Phalombe relocation in two years
The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development says relocation of Phalombe District headquarters to Migowi will begin in the next two years.
Over six years ago, government announced plans to relocate the headquarters after geological studies showed that the present location is prone to disasters such as the 1991Napolo (avalanche).
Spokesperson for the ministry Maganizo Mazeze said the process would need a lot of money to complete.
“The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, within the next 24 months, will embark on construction of new district administration offices and/or renovate existing offices in almost all district councils.
“Under that Project, Phalombe will be a priority in keeping with the relocation exercise. Once modern infrastructures have been erected, the district administration would now move to Migowi,” said Mazeze.
Traditional Authority (T/A) Kaduya told Nation on Sunday that delays to shift PhalombeBoma to Migowi are not only denying residents basic facilities, but also investment from the private sector.
“Even those who had acquired land for commercial purposes are slowly withdrawing because there seems to be no political will for the project.
“There are even fears that the project will never materialise. Government should have come out in the open regarding the future of the project,” said Kaduya.
