Urban music artists Hyphen and Piksy lived up to their pledge on Saturday when they fed over 100 orphans at Chikondi Disability Orphan Care Centre in Ndirande Township in Blantyre.

In an interview on Sunday, Hyphen said he and Piksy carried out various initiatives as part of their double birthday celebrations which included hosting a fundraising show at the Blue Elephant in Blantyre last week whose proceeds were used for the treat at the orphanage.

He said during the Saturday event, they shared lunch with the excited orphans and later donated items such as soap and lotion, and clothes sourced from their friends.

“This is a humbling experience. Despite not having the resources we had projected, the event was a huge success. This was a good start to the relationship we are trying to build with the centre,” said Hyphen, whose real name is Francis Kaphuka.

On his part, Piksy, real name Evans Zangazanga said the event stressed how a little gesture can go a long way.

“We didn’t have a lot of resources but we were able to put smiles on the orphans’ faces with the little that we got. We are all Malawians and everyone should take it as their responsibility to take care of one another,” he said.

Chikondi Disabilities Orphan Care Centre was founded by Josephine Mussa who has been taking care of children with disabilities and orphans in Ndirande and surrounding areas for the past 21 years.

In an interview, Mussa said she was grateful for the gesture by the two musicians.

“Ever since we started, we have not seen anything like this. It is remarkable and we are thankful to the two artists for feeding these orphans today. I am honestly short of words but the look on these happy faces says it all,” she said.

The two artists have indicated their intention to enter into a long-term partnership with the centre.
