There is joy in Traditional Authority Chulu in Kasungu District following the installation of solar-powered water systems in the area.

World Vision Malawi installed four solar-powered water systems in group village head (GVH) Thumbolibwe, at Chulu Trading Centre, Chulu Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) and at Kantuwale in the area.

In an interview on Saturday, Juliana Banda, a mother from Chaveka Village, said the only borehole in the village produces salty water; hence, people were not using it.

“The other alternative was to draw water from rivers. However, this water was not safe for domestic purposes,” she said.

Banda thanked World Vision Malawi for installing a kiosk in the village, saying clean water is essential for people’s well-being.

At Chulu CDSS, teachers and students also expressed their joy with the mechanised water system.

The school’s head teacher Martin Mongira said piped water has improved the school’s sanitation and hygiene.

He said: “It was difficult to clean classrooms, the girl’s hostel and offices due to water challenges. However, we are pleased that keeping our school clean is not a problem now as water is readily available.

“I also thank World Vision Malawi for installing kiosks near teachers’ houses.”

On her part, Kazolika Water Users Association chairperson Joyce Phiri said clean water is helping people to practise hygiene, thereby preventing waterborne diseases.

“In the wake of the cholera outbreak in the country, clean water is important. We will take care of the facilities to ensure they serve people for a long time,” she said.

With support from World Vision USA, World Vision Malawi installed 10 kiosks at GVH Thumbolibwe, six kiosks at Chulu Trading Centre, nine taps at Chulu CDSS, nine kiosks at Kamtuwale as well as borehole at Chinseu Village
