Plane crash probe public hearing next week
Parliament’s Ad hoc Committee investigating the June 10 2024 military plane crash that killed former vice-president Saulos Chilima and eight others says it will next week enter a public hearing phase.
Committee chairperson Walter Nyamilandu said in a statement yesterday that the hearings are scheduled for Parliament Building in Lilongwe from June 17 to June 26 2026.

He said the hearings will focus on establishing key facts surrounding the flight, particularly the pre-flight arrangements and decision making processes that preceded the ill-fated journey to Mzuzu Airport from Lilongwe.
Nyamilandu said the development follows the completion of site inspections which provided members with critical technical and contextual insights.
He said: “The committee has invited relevant witnesses to appear and provide testimony. These include but are not limited to family members of the deceased passengers, representatives of the Malawi Defence Force, officials from the Office of the Vice-President and the Office of the Secretary to the President and Cabinet.”
Nyamilandu added that the committee will adopt a hybrid hearing model with some sessions held in camera while others will be open to the public including the media.
A representative of the Chilima family, Ephraim Chilima said in an interview yesterday that the family welcomed the fresh inquiry and that they are ready to testify.
