Police dismiss nomads on fraud

Malawi Police Service says it has not received any complaint from Mighty Wanderers Football Club in relation to fake entry tickets said to have been detected during their TNM Super League match against FCB Nyasa Bullets at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday.

South West Police Region spokesperson Beatrice Mikuwa said in an interview yesterday that there was no such complaint.

She said: “I have checked with all relevant offices and no complaint was lodged in relation to that issue.”

Reacting to the record K154.9 million gross revenue from the match, Wanderers brands and marketing manager Greyson Chapita said in an interview on Sunday that while they were satisfied by the feat, they were disappointed with the detection of fake tickets.

He said: “We continue to face challenges such as the circulation of fake tickets which is worrisome.

“Thankfully, we were able to detect and intervene in good time before it caused a major damage.

“We quickly stepped in to curb the situation and [we] have since notified the police. It appears to be a a coordinated syndicate and we are committed to getting to the bottom of it.”

Chapita added that while it did not significantly affect their revenue on the day, “We take this very seriously and we will continue working with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that such malpractice is eliminated completely”.

Super Leaguen of Malawi general secretary Williams Banda said they needed to check the fake tickets “that might contribute to a small percentage of revenue loss”.

When he was informed about police’s reaction, Chapita yesterday said the issue was being handled at rgw club’s board level.

From the gross, K21.252 million went towards meeting expenses, leaving a K33.43 million net collection from which the two teams got K36.77 million each.

Ministry of Youth and Sports received K33.43 million as ground levy, Sulom got K13.37 million while Malawi National Council of Sports and   Football Association of Malawi got K6.686 million each.
