Police in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, on Thursday impounded a 15-tonne-Scania track in Area 47 believed to have carried stolen items upon a tip-off from members of the public.

The items include electrical wires, cables and water pumps were destined for South Africa.

Lilongwe Police spokesperson Ramsey Mushani said police have arrested eight people including the driver of the track registration number KA 3126.

“Our informers also told us that the items were to be taken to South Africa. We would like to thank the general public for the cordial relationship we have with them,” he said.

Mushani said some of the items believed to have been vandalised belong to Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL). “We suspect that the items are from MTL, Lilongwe Water Board and Escom. We invited them to come and identify the items,” Said Mushani.

Those arrested include James Milazi, Macdonald Kanyama Phiri, Edward Alab and Macdonald Mpekayani.
