Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Cecilia Chazama has said the Malawi Police Service (MPS) needs additional 600 vehicles to operate smoothly.
She made the remarks in Parliament when she was responding to a question from Nkhotakota South East legislator Makowa Mwale (Malawi Congress Party-MCP), who wanted to know how the 100 new-fleet of vehicles donated by the Chinese government have been allocated and what are the conditions attached.
In his question under Standing Order 69, Mwale expressed concern over repairs, conditions attached and distribution.
“Could the minister give a clear statement on how the vehicles were distributed within the police, what conditions are attached and how easy will it be to get spare parts?” he said.
In response, Chazama said there were no conditions attached to the donations. She also brushed aside fears of spares, saying the cars came with spare parts. n
