Police uniform import probe concluded
Police have said they are almost through with investigations into un-claimed Malawi Police Service uniforms found at Kamuzu and Chileka international airports about three months ago.
National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya said in an interview hearing of the case was expected to start on May 19 2023 at the Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court, but was postponed to a date to be communicated because some defence lawyers were busy with other matters.
The unclaimed consignment consisted of 10 000 police badges, 5 000 security vests and 6 000 pairs of trousers for male police officers, he said.
Said Kalaya: “We are just waiting for the court to set a date for commencement of trial, but we are almost through with our investigations. The unclaimed kit is still at the airport and will be used as an exhibit.”
Police arrested seven people in connection with the suspicious purchase of the items.
The suspects are on bail and include three Malawian businesspersons Riaz Jakhura, Moshing Nathwani and Javed Alam. Others who were also nabbed are George Saonda, Arthur Bito and Enock Henderson.
Kalaya said the suspects are suspected to have duped a businesswoman of at least K4 billion after convincing her that they had a contract with Malawi Government to supply the uniforms.
He said the contract documents used were allegedly forged.
