Portland Cement honours mothers with K10m donation to Balaka District Hospital
Portland Cement Limited (PCL) on Friday celebrated Mother’s Day with a visit to Balaka District Hospital where the company donated items worth K10 million to children’s and postnatal wards.
The donation, which included essential supplies for mothers and newborns, aimed to celebrate and appreciate mothers’ role in building families and communities.

Speaking during the event, PCL deputy general manager commercial Hu Feing said the company’s growth is closely tied to the well-being of surrounding communities, especially in Balaka where it is developing a new production plant.
“Our growth goes hand in hand with the progress and welfare of the people around us. This visit is our way of thanking mothers for their strength, resilience and love,” he said.

PCL corporate social responsibility (CSR) representative Violet Vilili described the gesture as part of the company’s ongoing CSR efforts to uplift communities through meaningful and sustainable initiatives.
She said: “We do not exist in isolation. As a company, we are part of the communities that surround us and it is our duty to support and uplift them.

“This visit reaffirmed PCL’s commitment to supporting community welfare as it expands through the Balaka Plant Project to ensure that the company’s growth translates into shared prosperity and an improved quality of life for local residents.”
In her remarks, the hospital matron Chifundo Mambulu, described the gesture as something special to the mothers.
“We appreciate this support. The mothers are grateful because these items will help them in the coming days,” she said.

She added that four babies were born on Mothers’ Day and 18 within the past 48 hours. Mambulu also noted that many patients face challenges such as lack of food, especially those referred from distant areas, and said the donation would help ease their burden.
