PP not in celebration—Msonda

Malawi’s ruling People’s Party (PP) has clarified that the party was not leading Malawians into any celebrations after president Bingu wa Mutharika’s death, but commemorating President Joyce Banda’s one year in office.

The party’s deputy publicity secretary Ken Msonda said in an interview PP was just honouring President Banda and commemorating a year in office.

Msonda said: “Since the ascendancy of the President to the high office of Head of State, there is hope for this nation.

“A year ago, Malawi lost its democratic identity as a nation. Democratic and human rights values Malawians fought for in 1993/94 were thrown to the dogs.”

But the Democratic Progressive party (DPP), through its spokesperson Nicholas Dausi, has always argued things were better off during its time as there were no daily price increment of goods and services and a bag of maize was never sold at K10 000 (about $25), among other arguments.

Msonda said God, in His wisdom, changed the administration and ushered in a ‘stateswoman’ in the name Banda and her PP administration.

He said the going was indeed tough, but with PP administration, Malawi’s future is bright and promising.
