PP vice-president excited with parliamentary victory

Newly appointed People’s Party (PP) vice-president Harry Mkandawire says he is very excited at finally going to Parliament after three futile attempts.

Mkandawire will represent Mzimba West Constituency should the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) uphold the constituency’s results in the ongoing vote recounting exercise.

Speaking for the first time since the elections, Mkandawire said the win cements his best season in politics as it comes barely three weeks after President Joyce Banda promoted him from PP national treasurer to the party’s vice-presidency ditched by State Vice-President Khumbo Kachali.

“I feel very excited. For a long time, I have wanted to be a servant of my people,” said Mkandawire.

He explained: “I feel honoured that the party appreciates my contribution and the people of Mzimba have just demonstrated their unwavering support. I will always represent their interests at all levels.”

Mkandawire was defeated by DPP’s Good Kayira in Mzuzu City in 2004 and musician Billy Kaunda in Mzimba West in 2009.

However, his victory faces a new challenge as third-placed Loveness Gondwe of National Rainbow Coalition (Narc) is refusing to accept the result.
