Public charity, Press Trust, on Wednesday officially handed over a 64-bed girl’s hostel to Henry Henderson Institute (HHI) Secondary School in Blantyre.

The hostel is expected to accommodate 148 students.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Tony Kandiero, who is a trustee of Press Trust, said they built the hostel to reduce accommodation problems the school is facing.

“We budgeted to spend K200 million in various projects this year, but this project alone has cost us about K50 million. However, we are pleased and we expect to see it benefiting students,” said Kandiero

Blantyre CCAP Synod general secretary the Reverend Alex Maulana thanked Press Trust for building the hostel.

He said education is key to development, hence needs more support from government and the corporate world.

“Our synod is committed to supporting the education system and that is why we constructed some schools, including HHI. This hostel complements our dream of ensuring quality facilities in schools and we are happy that the hostel will accommodate more students,” said Maulana

He said the school plans to mobilise funds to build a dining hall at the school.

HHI head teacher Tiakonzere Dumera said the hostel will help in improving education of the girl-child at the school.

“This hostel will give girls ample time to study as they will be residing here,” she said.
