Probing HIV cure herbs: Who is losing?
Since the first case of HIV was reported in Malawi in the early 1980, herbalists in Malawi have made various claims purpoting to have found a cure.
It began in May 1995, with herbalist Billy Goodson Chisupe who challenged that his Mchape herb could cure HIV and Aids. The response from those who suspected or believed they were infected with the virus was just overwhelming.
Truck-loads of people trekked down to Machinga to drink the so-called life-saving concoction.
In the early 2000s, another herbalist, George Kumbuyo, emerged with his Chambe drug, with outlandish claims to be the therapy which scientists worldwide are struggling to come up with.
Sadly, their claims were short-lived. None of them ever made efforts to take their concoction to another level—to go into the laboratory.
When Lilongwe-based Gloria Jeremiah also stormed the scene claiming to have a cure for HIV with her Garani MW1 herb, it was like the same old story of herbalists.
While her claims can best be justified by herself and her clients, Jeremiah stands tall as the only herbalist who has challenged laboratory experts to experiment on her herbs to check their efficacy.
“I have done everything that was supposed to be done. I have challenged anyone to bring me people they know are HIV positive to get my herb. After treatment, they have to go anywhere for a second HIV test and they will be found HIV negative. I tried the herb even on people I bumped into the streets and they were healed successfully,” she claims.
A spot check in some of her shops in Blantyre, Chikwawa, Zomba and Mulanje revealed that people are taking the herb. During our recent visit to one f her shops at Dyeratu Trading Centre in Chikwawa, we found six people on a queue waiting to buy the herbs.
“The medicine improves the immune system by increasing one’s CD4 cell count because viral replication is reduced to undetectable levels. The body is then able to fight opportunitistic infections that come due to compromised immunity. People have tested non-reactive to HIV using both antibody and HIV-DNA PCR tests,” says Jeremiah.
She adds that she advises her patients not to stop taking their medication until the doctor says so. She claims that some people who were not HIV positive but took the drug have reported success stories on diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, cancer, stomach ulcers and other abnormal swellings in the body and wonders why all that success should be ignored.
This success is nothing if not recognised by the government. To date Garani MW1 is not recognised as a treatment for any disease. In an earlier interview, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health Henry Chimbali said there is still no HIV cure and no herb can be accredited without a recommendation of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Malawi has an WHO office which can be consulted but our investigations show that the office has never been contacted before.
WHO representative for Malawi Dr Eugene Nyarko, who revealed that no-one has contacted his office door on the matter, pointed out that the organisation does not deal directly with individuals who claim to have herbs that cure any disease.
“There are steps that are supposed to be followed. WHO recognises drugs that have gone through scientific tests. WHO offices are only available to offer guidance on how this can be done,” says Nyarko, adding that clinical tests are long processes that can go on for years.
Jeremiah, who is pursuing a master’s degree in public health at the College of Medicine, also appreciates the need for scientific tests.
To achieve this, since 2008 when she came up with the herb, she has been to the Office of the President and Cabinet, Chancellor College (Chemistry Department), Pharmacy, Medicines and Poisons Board (PMPB), Malawi Blood Transfusion Services (MBTS), Bwaila hospital and other notable offices for scientific tests which, shesays, were done.
“It is good to do what is right. The herb is treating and so what should stop me from making efforts to have it adopted? The results I got from all these offices are encouraging,” she says.
Professor Fanuel Lampiano, reproductive health physiologist at COM, is also following up on the herb and says Jeremiah needs support.
“I like her approach because she is open and very willing to have her herb tested anywhere. She took [her drug] to relevant places including COM. The good news is that there are some parts of the herb that can heal cancer. However, in medicine, laboratory tests are a process and are very expensive. With proper support, we have the capacity to produce the final extract which can be submitted to WHO,” he says.
Lampiano, who has done extensive research on how some traditional reproductive herbs such as gondolosi and nkhondo kubedi, believes that some herbs cure diseases but what is worrisome is what happens to the substances taken up by the body immediately or later.
“Scientists want to look at the substances in the herb and their impact if absorbed into the blood stream,” says Lampiao.
He rates previous tests on the herb successful but says other laboratory tests will follow. He revealed that the next test, which will look at the substance quantity in the herb, will be done by the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS).
If successful, he says, the research will lead to other tests that will help to produce a final extract to be submitted to relevant international bodies.
Over eight months since the samples were submitted, Davlin Chokazinga, executive director for MBS, says they have done nothing. He says the whole project requires K18 million and his office has no money.
“Our hands are tied and we cannot give any comprehensive comment because we need K18 million to do the research. If we get the money we will proceed. We have written proposals to Press Corporation and National Aids Council (NAC) to support the research, but both said they could not afford,” says Chokazinga.
This has halted all the progress. Jeremiah, too, says she is helpless. However, what is baffling now is that Garani MW1 is on the market across Malawi and is being bought in large amounts.
In case the herb is efficient and harmless, who answers for the needless deaths as people are dying because they are following the direction that there is no HIV cure? What if the herb has harmful substances that are hazardous to health; who will carry the blame? These are the questions that need not to be over looked.
Our investigations show that there are plenty of herbalists selling different types of drugs claimed to cure HIV, but they have not been taken to any laboratory.
Martha Kwataine, executive director of Malawi Health Equity network (MHEN), commends Jeremiah for taking steps to have her herbs undergo clinical tests, but says the process might be slow because it is long and expensive.
Kwataine says the main challenge is that the country is not focused on research.
“We should not take shortcuts because if government rushes in its intervention, it can be sued later if something happens. We have the capacity to do preliminary tests, but it is a process that requires patience,” says Kwataine.
She observes that while the government does not directly regulate herbalists, it recognises them. She says the dangerous thing is that people become desperate when sick and they can take anything to save life.
On the way forward, Kwataine calls for a concerted effort to have the herb undergo proper test, saying team work can produce results.

Dhani Ram Baruah, the Guwahati-based cardiac surgeon who had hit
headlines and was also jailed for 40 days about 18 years ago by
transplanting a pig’s heart on a human body, on Wednesday claimed he had
discovered “cure” for HIV/AIDS and that he had already “cured” 86
persons in the past seven or eight years. and this was comfirm to be true and will be publish to the general awareness.
“I and my team have worked hard for the past 18 years and found the
cure for HIV/AIDS by using biological molecules isolated from edible
medicinal plants that are available in the Himalayan region. I have
named them Baruah Biological Combat Genes which are used as biological
missiles to kill the dreaded HIV virus to improve the immune system,”
Baruah said.
He also presented before the media a patient called Bijendra Singh of
Rohtak, who, according to Baruah, was tested HIV-positive in 2008, but
was now “totally cured” and had recently tested negative. “Singh is
among 86 persons whom I have cured of HIV/AIDS in the past eight years,’
Baruah asserted.
The cardiac surgeon who had to face arrest after he had transplanted a
pig’s heart on a 32-year old male patient’s body following which the
patient survived for seven days in 1997, said he had already written to
UNAIDS, WHO and the National Institute of Health (US) about his
“success” with HIV/AIDS, and was open to scrutiny.
“I have already written to UNAIDS, WHO and the National Institute of
Health of USA about my success stories with HIV/AIDS patients and have
asked them to conduct scrutiny of my experiments that have already given
a new lease of life to 86 persons,” Baruah said. He also said that
while he had carried out a series of tests after completion of treatment
of his 86 patients, all have tested HIV-negative in those tests.
“This patient Bijendra Singh went back to the same lab in Rohtak
which had declared his HIV infection eight years ago, and has been found
to be free of HIV/AIDS in 2014 after I declared him as cured,” Baruah
said. The surgeon who runs his Institute of Applied Human Genetic
Engineering at Sonapur, about 20 kms from Guwahati, on Wednesday also
released his two-volume book called “AIDS: Reaching the Unreachable with
