Procurement should drive business strategy — MIPS

The Malawi Institute of Procurement and Supply (MIPS) has challenged procurement professionals to position themselves as strategic partners that drive organisational growth.

Speaking on Thursday during a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) workshop in Salima, MIPS chief executive officer Amos Nyambo said procurement should move beyond purchasing goods and services to support business strategy.

The workshop, held at Sunbird Livingstonia Beach Hotel under the theme Aligning Procurement Operations with Business Strategy, attracted procurement professionals from the public, private and third sectors.

Nyambo said economic uncertainty, technological disruption, climate-related risks, changing regulations and rising stakeholder expectations demand a strategic approach to procurement.

“Procurement can no longer be viewed simply as a transactional function responsible for purchasing goods and services. It must be recognised as a strategic enabler of organisational success,” he said.

He said leading global companies, including Coca-Cola, Toyota, Apple, Ford and Tesla, involve procurement in shaping business decisions.

According to Nyambo, aligning procurement with organisational goals promotes innovation, strengthens resilience, manages risk, enhances competitiveness and creates long-term value.

He said MIPS is committed to producing procurement leaders who uphold ethical standards, embrace innovation and contribute to Malawi’s economic development through continuous professional development.
