Promote peace, unity, chiefs told

Deputy Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Owen Chomanika has urged traditional leaders to promote peace and unity among their subjects for their areasto develop.

He said this on Friday at Mgwayi Ground in Traditional Authority (T/A) Njewa in Lilongwe District during the elevation ceremony of T/A Kalumba to Senior Chief and installation of Button Chakhumba as T/A Malili.

Chakhumba was installed T/A following the death of Senior Chief Malili in a road accident in Mitundu, Lilongwe last year.

Chomanika said government was elevating chiefs to help the government in fostering development programmes in their areas.

He said: “As chiefs, you need to lead by example by promoting peace and unity.

“You also should desist from corruption and bias when earmarking people for government’s safety net programmes such as the Social Cash Transfer, Climate-Smart Enhanced Public Works Programmes and Affordable Inputs Programme.”

Speaking on behalf of other chiefs, Senior Chief Njewa thanked President Lazarus Chakwera for entrusting her with the new position, saying she will ensure that she promotes government’s development agenda.

“I am more than happy to be part of the history that has been made today. I don’t take this for granted and I pledge to work and abide by the rule of law,” she said.

Minister of Mining Monica Chang’anamuno, Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social welfare Jean Sendeza, former minister of Agriculture Lobin Lowe and Lilongwe district commissioner Lawford Palani were among those who graced the event.
