 Record smasher!

US-based Malawian iconic female footballer Temwa Chawinga says her goal is to break records on the world stage.

The Scorchers forward yesterday broke the US National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) record when she netted her 19th league goal in her team Kansas City (KC) Current’s 1-0 win over Bay FC at San Jose’s PayPal Park in California as her flirtation with the US women’s top flight reached new dizzy heights.

The 26-year-old broke the record set by Sam Kerr with the Chicago Red Stars in 2019.

Temwa: Hopefully I will achieve more

Sounding ice-cool and at peace with herself  in an interview yesterday, the 2023 world overall top scorer, said: “It feels really great to become the all-time top scorer in only my debut season.

“I am so excited, but I won’t sit on my laurels. Hopefully I can score a couple of more goals before we wind up.

“Looking at the larger picture, this is done. Now I have to aim at winning big things and breaking records on the world stage. Of course, I am the 2023 world top scorer, but there are many more bigger accolades out there.

“This is not only for me. My teammates and the coaches deserve all the credit for their support because without them, I wouldn’t be scoring all these goals. At the end of the day, it’s about team work.”

Temwa is now six goals clear of second-placed Zambian Barbara Banda of Orlando Pride.

She, however, stressed that she isn’t competing with anyone.

“I am not in competition with anyone, I score goals because that is my duty as a striker…To help my team win games, that is what is expected of me.”

The beauty of her goal lay in the execution.  She dispossessed an opponent and with all her guile and ingenuity, she fired the ball into the bottom left corner from outside the 18-yard box.

No fuss, no panic. Job done.

Following the win,  KC Current are third with 49 points from 24 matches, eight behind leaders Orlando Pride and a point shy of second-placed Gotham.

With two rounds of matches remaining plus the play-off, Temwa has a chance to increase her tally.

National Women’s Football Association hailed Temwa for her feat.

The association’s chairperson Adellaide Migogo said: “We are extremely proud of her. We knew she would break the record, it was just a matter of time.

“Temwa keeps on giving us a reason to smile as she continues to fly the national flag high.”
