Teams must score more goals instead of attributing their defeats to referees, FAM referees development officer Maxwell Mtonga has advised.

The Nation

had asked Mtonga on Tuesday his opinion on the weekly claims by Super League coaches who attribute their draws or losses to substandard officiation.

“That is a scape goat. For example, how many players miss penalty kicks, yet clubs do not talk about it, but when there is one anomaly by a referee, they blow it up. If I were a coach, I would tell my boys to score as many goals as possible,” said Mtonga.

Last week, retired CAF referees manager Bester Kalombo also backed local referees despite growing attacks on them with reports of match-fixing increasing.

Sulom recently fined Blue Eagles and Big Bullets for ugly scenes that marred their meeting at Kamuzu Stadium and also wrote the National Referees Committee over growing inconsistency in refereeing decisions.
