Regional cycling games in action today

Cyclists are on the road today in their respective regions for regional races the Cycling Federation of Malawi organised ahead of October 5 National Championship to be held in Blantyre.

In an interview, Cycling Federation of Malawi president Malumbo Kaira said such games are part of preparations for the national championship in October and other national and international games the country’s athletes will take part in.

He said they have made efforts to ensure that cyclists are given enough competitions because it is through such competitions that cyclists remain committed to the sport.

Kaira said with many cycling competitions, the country has realised improved individual performance at international competitions.

“Malawi junior cyclist Gift Nazombe from Blantyre Cycling Club secured sponsorship and is attending training at High Performance Centre in South Africa following good performance at the 109-kilometre 2025 Cape Town Cycle Tour on March 9 2025. The opportunity will give him a platform to be groomed by top cycling coaches,” he said.

Nazombe, who was accompanied by three other cyclists from Malawi to the tour, emerged the champion in Group-E in which 566 cyclists from across the world participated.

He covered the 109-kilometre distance in 3 hours and 4 minutes which translates to 35:4 kilometres per hour.

Mzuzu Cycling Club chairperson Mike Mtika said as a club they are grateful to have many competitions.

“We cannot become good cyclists when competitions are not there. As a club, we are ready to take part in all competitions starting this Sunday and our preparations ahead of all those competitions are intense,” he said.

Malawi National Cycling coach Martin Mtawali said Malawi cyclists have potential to do wonders for the country at the international stage but what is required is to be given the necessary support.

Missi Kathumba, who won the 2024 Tour de Dwangwa Cycling Race in professional drop hand bike category, said in an interview that with more competitions lined up, he is motivated to work extra hard.
