The Parliamentary Committee on Health says it is impressed with the strides Rumphi District Hospital has taken to contain cholera cases from over 1 044 cumulative cases to three as of January 11 2023.

Leader of delegation for Rumphi team and Nsanje Central legislator Kafandikhale Mandevana made the remarks on Tuesday when he and other committee members visited Rumphi District Hospital and Mtangwanika Health Centre, which used to be a cholera hotspot, to appreciate efforts to contain the outbreak.

He said in spite of several challenges, the facility has been able to contain the spread of the disease.

Said Mandevana: “We have seen that the case management was proper because only 1.6 percent [17] out of 1 044 patients died.”

Rumphi district enviromental health officer Ojohn Mpoha said collaboration between different stakeholders at council level made it easier for communities to accept cholera preventive guidelines.

He said: “But we need assistance from partners to increase the number of tents for the district as it currently has just eight which carters for 15 health facilities in the district.”

Currently, Rumphi has three active cholera cases that have been reported in the past 10 days.
