It rained cats and dogs on Sunday, but the wet greens at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) still gave Andrew Santhe and Adriano Guarino a perfect atmosphere to win the Lab Enterprises Match Play Golf competition doubles title.

However, it was after Guarino birdied on hole 16 that the two started to see victory coming their way before finally overcoming resistance from the Kalambule couple—Medson and Sophie—in the finals with four-points up.

“Our combination worked well because we supported each other all through. I played badly on some holes and my partner covered me up.

“We had been a point behind for the better part of this, but that birdie on the 16th gave us a sigh of relief,” Santhe said as Guarino, who was having his first golfing experience as a handicap 13 golfer, nodded in agreement.

Furkan Gani took the crown in the singles category with two holes to go. He won three in two against his female contender Magaret Mukwenha.

John-Gift Mwakhwawa flaunted five-under-par performance to win individual stableford plate which belonged to those that lost on the way in the three-month Match Play event and those that just contested in the final day.

He beat a field of 72 golfers to take the glory with 41 points. Eric Chapola and Paul Chidale settled for the second and third slots with 39 points and 36 points respectively.

The new Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) ladies president Wilma Chalulu underscored her class by winning the plate’s ladies title with 34 points, four point ahead of runner-up Teri Amaro who found solace in hitting the longest drive on the second hole.

After flashing out medals and Game Store shopping vouchers ranging from K10 000 (about $25) to K70 000 (about $175) to all the winners and presenting K250 000 (about $625) to BSC for the maintenance of the greens, Lab Enterprises managing director Noel Lipipa promised to come back bigger and better next year.
