Scorchers get boost

Malawi women’s national football team, the Scorchers’ last group arrived in Lusaka, Zambia yesterday for two international friendly matches against Copper Queens.

The Scorchers face the hosts tomorrow before the second leg set for next Tuesday at Woodlands Stadium.

Initially, the Scorchers were supposed to travel Tuesday as one group.

However, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) on Monday announced the team will travel in three groups as the flight to Lusaka had limited space.

The first group of five players and three officials left on Tuesday followed by the second one on Wednesday, comprising  five players and three officials.

The last group of eight players and three officials finally joined the others yesterday.

France-based captain Tabitha Chawinga also arrived yesterday while Rose Kabzere jetted in on Wednesday.

However, Kazakhstan-based duo of Vanessa Chikupira and Bernadette Mkandawire, who were expected to fly directly to Lusaka, are yet to arrive.

Other foreign-based players  Temwa Chawinga (USA), Democratic Republic of Congo-based duo of Sabina Thom and Chimwemwe Madise joined the camp in Malawi and travelled with the rest of the local delegation.

Meanwhile, Scorchers head coach Lovemore Fazili in an interview said they are ready for the two matches.

He said: “The morale is high in camp. We are ready for the two matches.”

The last time the two sides clashed was at Cosafa Women’s Championship semi-final which the Copper Queens won 2-0.
