Scorchers off women’s FA control

The National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) says it no longer handles issues relating to the Malawi National Women’s Football Team after being stopped by the Football Association of Malawi (FAM).

NWFA chairperson Adellaide Migogo said this when she was asked about their expectations from the Scorchers as they prepare for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations’ qualifiers.

She said: “As NWFA, we are no longer in charge of Scorchers.

“The new FAM setup has placed the Scorchers directly under FAM. NWFA is in charge of grassroots football development all the way up to regional leagues and national championship.

“FAM has taken over the direct Scorchers’ operations.”

But FAM competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka said the Scocrchers have never been under the control of  Women FA.

He said: “Their mandate is the development of women’s football from the grassroots. The affairs of all national teams is under FAM.”

However, immediate-past NWFA chairperson Suzgo Ngwira-Simbi said during her  tenure, they used to be involved in national teams’ affairs.

She said: “The challenge now is that there is a big disconnect between FAM and women’s football leadership.

“For instance, during my time, we used to be involved in the affairs of the national teams, including matches, camping and technical set-up. I even lobbied to be included in the FAM technical subcommittee to advance the interests of women’s football, especially the national teams.

“On the other hand, the NWFA needs to lobby for their inclusion and the right platform is during FAM ex-co [executive committee] meetings. That is where I would advance our interests as women’s football leadership.”

Kukoma Ntopwa Women’s football team owner and technical director Isaac Jomo Osman said the current FAM leadership needs to empower the NWFA in running the affairs of national teams as well.

“If they can’t let them run the national teams, then what else is their role because regional leagues are run by regional associations? FAM elections are gone, let’s not politicise football with an aim to  settle scores with certain inviduals, it’s not right,” he said.
