The Scorchers yesterday completed the group stages of 2023 HollywoodBets Cosafa Women’s Championship with a 100 percent record after a 3-1 victory over Madagascar at UJ Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The result means the Scorchers top Group A with nine points while hosts South Africa, who are the pool’s runners-up with six points, have been eliminated.

E-Swatini finished third with three points from their single win over group anchors  Madagascar.

The Scorchers, following in the footsteps of the Flames who also registered a 100 percent record at a similar competition in July,  have since set up a semi-final clash against Mozambique who finished as best runners-up across all groups.

Malawi coach Lovemore Fazili had the luxury of making six changes since Malawi had already qualified for the semis after victories over South Africa (3-4) and e-Swatini (8-0).

Faith Chinzimu, Mary Major, Rose Kabzere, Leticia Chinyamula, Funny Magombo and Vanessa Chikupira started the match as the coach opted to rest Chimwemwe Madise, Ireen Nkhumalo, Caroline Mathyola, Madyina Ngulube, Lyna James and Temwa Chawinga.

Scorchers celebrate one of their goals

Two quick goals from Vanessa Chikupila in the 22nd minute and Leticia Chinyamula  in the 24th put the Scorchers in front.

But the islanders pulled one back through Helisoa Randrianariviero from the spot after Malawi ‘keeper Mercy Sikelo fouled an advancing Julie Solonilala in the 32nd minute.

But Asimenye Simwaka restored the Scorchers’ two-goal lead  two minutes later for the first half to end 3-1.

The second-half produced no goals as Malawi confirmed their place as group winners.

Fazili said while he was glad to finish as group leaders, the team needs to be prepared for the semis where they expect tough opposition.

He said: “Obviously, it will get tougher. But we will be ready. We have put behind the group stages and are now looking forward to the semis.”

Meanwhile, defending champions Zambia, who made it to the semis as Group B winners will face the winners from Group C to be determined today.
