A security guard has been killed in the course of a robbery that cost Standard Bank Malawi plc K31.6 million at its Kasungu Branch on Thursday.

Kasungu Police Station spokesperson Joseph Kachikho in an interview said police have since launched an investigation to arrest the suspects.

The security guard has been identified as Redson Banda, 55, from Suza Village in Traditional Authority Kaomba in Kasungu District.

He was working for a local firm, UK Security, which has a contract with the bank, the police said.

“Robbers came in at dawn and tied the guard. They later broke into the bank and stole K31 640 000. In the process, they killed the guard using objects as evidenced by the head injuries he sustained,” Kachikho remarked yesterday.

He said the robbers disabled the closed-circuit television cameras “so that they cannot be traced”.

“However, we are using other intelligence to capture them,” Kachikho said.

Standard Bank plc head of brand and marketing Nyambura Chege said in a statement yesterday it has closed the branch.

“The bank has sent an incident management team to the scene to assess the situation and has notified the authorities at Kasungu.

“As a result, the Branch at Kasungu will be closed till further notice. Bank clients within the Branch vicinity are requested to utilize digital channels that are accessible to them,” the statement reads in part.
