Selective justice parade on
A group calling themselves Concerned Youths has confirmed that their planned parade fighting against selective justice will take place on Thursday, September 15, 2022, as previously announced.
The Concerned Youths made the announcement on Monday afternoon when they addressed members of the press at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre. The group leader Penjani ‘Fredokiss’ Kalua said the parade would begin from Ndirande and end at Sanjika Palace where they will present a petition to the State President.
“This is not a demonstration but a parade hence, the inclusion of other activities such as poetry performances, storytelling, and music. We want to drive our message home as regards selective justice, a cancer we feel is growing in Malawi,” he said.
The parade has been premised on a case involving teenager John Mussa who was convicted for possessing Indian Hemp and was initially given an eight-year custodial sentence which was later trimmed to three.
Kalua said their actions are not in any way meant to undermine the judiciary but an appeal to the president to exercise leniency on Mussa who is young with a whole life ahead of him.
One of the organising partners of the parade, Men of Tomorrow Malawi, through its representative Steve Mulangiza said custodial sentences are not the only remedy for lawbreakers.
He said: “We are not trying to condone lawlessness. But the prison facilities are at times, not the best correctional facilities. We should avoid falling into a situation where we create more dangerous criminals than giving them a second chance at life.”
Apart from Kalua and Men of Tomorrow, the parade is also being organised by other organisations such as Pido International and Youth For Parliament Malawi.
