Senior Chief Kaomba in court over alleged promotion

Senior Chief Kaomba of Kasungu District is today expected to appear before the Kasungu Magistrate’s Court to answer charges of forgery and uttering a false document.

National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya in an interview yesterday said the court session follows the arrest on Friday of the chief and two others for alleged forgery of a letter purported to be from Kasungu district commissioner (DC) promoting Senior Chief Kaomba to the status of paramount chief.

Accused: Senior Chief Kaomba

“It is true. He was arrested on Friday and was released on bail on the same day. But for more details, I will refer you to our public relations officer for Kasungu Joseph Kachikho,” he said.

Kachikho said the 74-year-old Senior Chief Kaomba, born Eliya Ngalande Kaomba, was arrested on charges of forgery and uttering a false document.

He said the chief was arrested alongside two other suspects, Joseph Kaunda, 37, and Levison Chauma Makombe, 63.

“The three were arrested on Friday, May 12 2023, following investigations after a purported promotion letter of Senior Chief Kaomba to Paramount Chief that bears Kasungu district commissioner’s signature and stamp. The DC denied authoring the letter.”

Kaomba comes from Cholowa Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kaomba while Kaunda is from Khungwa Village, T/A Simlemba also in Kasungu District. The third suspect, Makombe comes from Bango Village, T/A Mazengera in Lilongwe District.
