A team of Bashir Sharrif and Phillip Phambana, playing under Kingfisher Insurance Brokers banner, retained the Mulanje Mission Charity Golf Tournament title on Sunday at Mulanje Golf Club.

Sharrif and Phambana beat a field of 40 golfers with 42 points in a four-better-ball competition to defend the title.

Britam team of Grant Mwenechanya and Charles Mukiwa were second with 41 points, Bhose Kamphulusa and Ulemu Luhanga’s MRA team finished third with 40 points counted in.

Chikago Phiri and Rajiv Rawat’s team, sponsored by Makande Tea Estate, was fourth while Tony Chiwaya and Brigadier General Blaise Saenda’s team of TJ Enterprises and Elite Furniture made the cut in prize winning slot on fifth with 39 points.

Speaking after the prize presentation, Sharrif thanked the organisers of the charity competition.

“We would like to thank the organisers, sponsors and the Mulanje Golf Club for the tournament which is for a good cause,” he said.

“We are glad to win for the second consecutive year after pairing in last year’s competition under First Capital Bank sponsorship.”

Mulanje Mission Hospital’s Dr Ruth Shakespeare commended the companies and organisers of the tournament which helped to address some of the problems the hospital faces.

“The golf tournament has helped us establish outpatient and high dependency units and buying equipment such as oxygen concentrators. This year, we are fundraising to renovate the children’s wards,” she said.

Tournament organiser Tony Chiwaya hailed companies for sponsoring the competition.

“We would like to thank companies, golfers and Mulanje Golf Club captain Ajay Singh for making this competition successful.

“We expect to get around K7 million which is within our target.
