Sheriffs in Mzuzu on Wednesday seized 28 refrigerators from Sana Super Store at North End Mall in Mzuzu for failing to pay a K4.8 million compensation to two Mzuzu based residents.

In April this year, Brenda Msuku and Wilson Chilunga bought and ate expired corn cakes from the store which later made them sick.

In an interview, Msuku said after discovering that the food was rotten, they lodged a complaint with the shop owners but the shop owner shouted at them called them names and disgraced them in the presence of other customers.

“We then decided to seek help from the court,” said Msuku.

On July 20, the Mzuzu Senior Resident Magistrate Court ordered Sana which was represented by Maclean Mkandawire to compensate the two within five days.

However, the store failed to compensate the two by July 25, which prompted sheriffs to seize property from the store.

Meanwhile, Sana has been given 10 days to pay the money failing which the items will be sold on auction to settle the amount. When contacted, Mkandawire refused to comment on the matter.
