Silver go top

Listen to this article

Silver Strikers moved to the top of the TNM Super League for the first time this season after beating Kamuzu Barracks (KB) FC 1-0 at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

Following the win, the Central Bankers top the 16-team flagship league with 18 points, a point above champions FCB Nyasa Bullets, whose unbeaten run was brought to a halt by giant killers Chitipa United who beat them 1-0 on Saturday at Karonga Stadium.

The Area 47-based side in Lilongwe also stand proudly as the only team yet to taste defeat.

The toast of the afternoon for the Reserve Bank of Malawi-sponsored side was Stein Davie who scored the lone goal in the 20th minute.

He pounced on a rebound with a simple tap-in after Chimwemwe Idana’s effort was blocked by the Malawi Defence Force outfit’s goalkeeper.

De Jhong: The most important thing is to win

Davie is now joint leading scorer with Bullets’ Lanjesi Nkhoma with seven goals apiece.

Silver coach Piter De Jhong said he was happy to go top.

He said: “We started well, we played the way we want to play, but we had a chance to score the second goal, but unfortunately we didn’t.

“The most important thing is that you win and we won, that’s what matters. Having said that, there is still a long way to go and we need to be firm.”

On his part, KB assistant coach Ted Kalinda bemoaned his team’s two consecutive losses.

He said: “Today, we played well, but we conceded early in the first half, but all in all, the boys played well.”

KB remain a place above the relegation zone with eight points from eight matches.

At Karonga Stadium, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers recovered from their last weekend’s  0-1 shock defeat at the hands of Chitipa United aka Nkhalamu zga ku Chitipa.

The Nomads are tied on 17 points with second-placed Bullets, but remain third due to an inferior goal difference.

Towering defender Lawrence Chaziya drew first blood for the Lali Lubani Road side in the second minute when he headed home a Stanley Sanudi well-curled corner-kick.

The Nomads led 1-0 at the interval, but Ingwina ya Karonga came into the second half a rejuvenated side and levelled the scores in the 51st minute through Alfred Chizinga, who capitalised on Chaziya’s defensive error.

Sensing danger, the Nomads reorganised themselves and were back in front 15 minutes later through Isaac ‘Tcheya’ Kaliyati’s beauty from a free-kick.

Nomads coach Mark Harrison said: “It wasn’t a footballing performance because there was no football to be played because of the state of the pitch.

“Anyway, we’ll just keep  moving from game to game. We are up there and only a point separates us with [leaders] Silver.”

In the day’s other match, Dedza Dynamos Salima Sugar came from a goal down to beat Civil Service United 2-1 at Dedza Stadium where Dedza’s Lughano Kayira was named man-of-the-match.
