Silver, Moyale protest fixtures

Silver Strikers FC have protested to Sulom against their weekend TNM Super League fixture against Moyale Barracks, arguing that they were supposed to be on bye.

The Central Bankers are scheduled to host the Mzuzu-based soldiers at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe this Saturday.

In an interview on Tuesday, Silver chief executive officer Thoko Chimbali said: “We have written Sulom [Super League of Malawi] to express our concern on the sudden changes. This is the third time that we are being affected by the frequent changes to the fixtures..

“It is important that they [Sulom] should do things professionally. It is not good for Sulom to give us a game against Moyale all of a sudden while we were initially supposed to be on bye. They are disturbing us.”

Chimbali also pleaded with Sulom to stick to the fixture they released earlier.

He said: “We planned based on that. They cannot just change the fixture anyhow. This is very unfair to us. Teams provided feedback on the initial fixture and it was supposed to be harmonised. It is very annoying that it keeps on changing.”

On his part, Moyale Barracks general secretary Flao Mwale said they are also concerned with frequent changes to the fixture.

“Teams have complained and we have spoken on this at length. As Moyale, this is a concern  and we are engaging Sulom. That is all we can say at the moment,” he said.

However, Sulom general secretary Williams Banda on Tuesday attributed the changes to effects of Covid-19.

He said: “It is indeed true that the changes affect their preparations, but that is why we initially asked for their input.

“The changes are coming under the influence of things that we cannot control. Teams are better placed to acknowledge that we are playing the games amid the Covid-19 pandemic and such sudden changes cannot be ruled out.”

Three weeks ago, Mighty Wanderers also lodged a similar complaint after being put on bye when they had played a few matches compared to other teams.
