Classic Silver Strikers yesterday battered Red Lions 4-0 at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe to reach the Fisd Challenge Cup round of 16 and consolidate their hopes of securing silverware this season.

Goals from in-form Michael Tetteh, Herbert Wayekha, Khuda Muyaba and Duncan Nyoni thoroughly paralysed the Zomba-based Malawi Defence Force (MDF) side which lacked intent in every aspect of the game.

Silver netted on the half hour mark when defender Wayekha headed in a free-kick from Thuso Paipi.

The Bankers extended their lead when striker Tetteh was set free and he beat Brighton Ngwenyama with a low drive.

Five minutes into the second half, Duncan Nyoni unleashed a low drive into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.

Muyaba sealed the game when he tucked the ball home from the penalty spot, after a handball in the 18 yard box.

Lions coach Nelson Chirwa blamed the loss on poor defending.

“There was no coordination in defence and goalkeeping was also poor. Nonetheless, we concede defeat and we will now focus on finishing in a better Super League position,” he said.

Silver assistant coach Peter Mgangira hailed his side for standing up to Lions’ physical game.

“We are pleased to have won this game. It was not an easy match considering that Red Lions play a physical game. I am happy that the players were not intimidated,” he said.
