Silver to name new coach

Silver Strikers have said they are still analysing applications for the position of head coach and the successful candidate will be named in due course.

This comes after the club hinted at maintaining the Leo Mpulula-led coaching panel next season depending on its performance towards the end of the just-ended season.

The Central Bankers had one of their worst seasons in recent times that saw them finishing the 2022 season empty-handed.

The club’s technical committee chairperson George Chiusiwa, who is also one of the directors, said in an interview that this follows an advertisement of the post towards the end of last season.

He said: “This is an administrative process that should be followed.

“The club will, therefore, make official pronouncements on its decision to engage the head coach soon.

“Additionally, a formal statement will also be made on the players that the club is releasing and those that will join us this football term.”

However, Chiusiwa could not be drawn to disclose how many applications they received, saying: “This is part of the application evaluation process.

“But we had a good response from local and foreign coaches.”

He also said the Reserve Bank of Malawi-sponsored side is carrying out routine technical undertakings by reviewing and assessing all performance indicators for all departments, including the technical and playing staff.

Said Chiusiwa: “The club is doing this in cognizant of the fact that we had a very bad season in 2022 and there is urgent need to correct things for a better performance in 2023.”

However, Silver Strikers chief executive officer Thoko Chimbali was quoted by The Daily Times as having said the club off-loaded veterans Frank Banda, Blessings Tembo and Tawonga. Prince Phiri and captain Mike Robert are also among the casualties.

The Central Bankers twice fired coaches during the 2022 season. Zambian Dan Kabwe was shown the exit door in July and his assistant McDonald Yobe took over in an interim capacity.

He too was removed in September to pave the way for Leo Mpulula, who took charge of the team up to the end of the season.

But Mpulula said they had little time to make an impact as they were appointed at a time the season was coming to an end.

The eight-time Super League champions finished the 2022 season on fifth position with 51 points, 22 points behind champions Nyasa Big Bullets.

They also failed to defend the FDH Bank Cup after being booted out by Salima Sugar Dedza Dynamos.

Their Airtel Top 8 campaign also ended in misery after losing to Bullets 3-1 in the semi-finals.

The last time they won the Super League was in 2013.
