Evance Songola and Bose Kamphulusa braved the scorching conditions at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) on Wednesday to win the inaugural Minet Malawi Insurance Brokers Ballpool.

Played on a stable-fold format, handicap-18 Songola triumphed in the men’s category after collecting 22 points. Zachariah Hara (h/c 15) counted out Furkan Gani (h/c 11) and Grant Mwenyechanya to the third and fourth positions, respectively, after tying on 21 points.

Songola said it was a must-win tournament for him because prior to the contest he had declared to the sponsor that he would win.

“Being an insurer myself, I had to win in appreciation of the sponsors being in the insurance industry as well,” he said.

In the ladies section, handicap-22 Kamphulusa, who is BSC ladies captain, led by example to emerge victorious with 14 points and count out Gloria Fiwa to the second position.

Jarson Pereira won the longest drive on the second hole in the men’s category. Coincidentally, his spouse Jolene Bapu did the same in the ladies section on hole eight. Wales Mataka won the nearest to the pin accolade.

Minet general manager (operations) Lester Chinyang’anya, whose firm donated K150 000 for greens maintenance, thanked BSC for allowing them to host the tournament in their fold.

“We were compelled to sponsor the tournament for two reasons. First, to create an interface with our existing and potential customers outside office environment, where we could interact and thank them for the support they have been giving us over the years. There are 17 insurance brokers in Malawi and we feel they deserve a token of appreciation for making the right choice,” he said.

“The other reason was to share with them developments that have taken place at Minet, their number one insurance brokers. We used to be called AON and in November last year, we rebranded to Minet Malawi.”

BSC golf captain Andrew Ngomwa thanked Minet Malawi for sponsoring the tournament.
