The Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi has elected Father Canon Alinafe Kalemba as the new bishop, replacing Bishop James Tengatenga who resigned in July this year.

Tengatenga resigned after being appointed dean of the Dartmouth College in the United States of America (USA).

The appointment, however, slipped through his fingers because of his stance on homosexuality.

Diocesan vicar general Venerable Patrick Mapundula on Tuesday said the elective assembly met at St Paul’s Cathedral in Blantyre on September 24 2013 and elected Kalemba as new bishop.

Mapundula said the bishop-elect’s name was confirmed on October 4 2013 and his consecration will be held at Country Club Limbe on October 27 2013.

“We have invited all bishops from the 15 dioceses of the Province of Central Africa to attend the consecration of our new bishop,” he said.

Mapundula said Kalemba’s enthronement will take place on December 22 2013 at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Blantyre.

Consecration organising chairperson Tawanda Madovi said the budget for the event is estimated at K10 million.

Madovi said Christians have already begun mobilising resources for the occasion.

The 46-year-old Kalemba becomes the 23rd black clergyman to lead the 32 000-member diocese after the white missionaries.
