Standard Bank will on Friday present awards to outstanding sports journalists, who covered the bank’s 2013 Knock-Out Cup, at a colourful ceremony at its regional office in Blantyre.

Head of Marketing Chimwemwe Matonga said the 2013 media competition received high quality entries from soccer journalists in all key media categories. Entries were assessed by a three-member independent judging panel.

“Judges are impressed with the increase in entries received and which were of an improved quality this year. This suggests that the Standard Bank Media Competition is achieving its goal of helping develop the quality of sports journalism in Malawi. From the reports I have received from the judging panel, the competition was tight and we can’t wait to see who has done it this year,” he said.

Matonga said the competition recognizes the critical role of sports journalists and their media houses in covering the Standard Bank Knockout Trophy. The Nation’s Garry Chirwa and MBC Radio One’s Peter Fote won last year’s Standard Bank Awards for print and electronic media.

“Once again, we are overwhelmed by the support that all forms of media render to Standard Bank during the period of this competition. They offer extensive media coverage of the Cup, and in so doing pass very vital information to key stakeholders, namely participating teams, organisers, fans, government and customers of the bank,” he said.

Matonga said Standard Bank has invested more than K1 million (about $2 500) in the competition.

The panel of judges is led by an academic, McLan Kanyan’gwa who is Lecturer and Head of Journalism and Media Studies at the Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi. Kanyang’wa previously worked as a reporter at The Nation.

The other two judges are Mavuto Kapyepye and Frank Phiri who both have extensive experience in journalism, publishing and strategic media communications.
