World netball authority, the International Netball Federation (INF) has renamed its Netball World Championship into a Netball World Cup.

In a recent response to The Nation’s questionnaire, INF officer Angela Colless said they renaming is in line with standards of major sporting events across the world.

“The Netball World Cup to be held in Sydney 2015 is the same tournament at the Netball World Championships. The name has been changed to align with other international sporting event like the Football World Cup, Rugby World Cup & Cricket World Cup,” Colless said.

The Queens will be eligible for the world cup which is open to top 16 ranked netball nations across the world. Malawi is placed fifth in the world and number one in Africa.

Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) president Rosy Chinunda said INF renamed the competition in November at the end of the Fast5 Netball Series in New Zealand where Malawi finished sixth.

Chinunda said NAM was unable to attend the meeting that effected the change as it coincided with the return schedule back home.
