The Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) has responded quickly to Standard Bank’s gesture to resume netball sponsorship.

NAM president Rosy Chinunda said her association has been in touch with Standard Bank’s communication manager Chimwemwe Matonga, who stated recently that the bank is ready to recommence sponsorship.

“Our vice-president had had talks on the phone with Standard Bank officials. The talks have been fruitful and next week we will be submitting the information they want as condition for the resumption of the sponsorship. It is something we have worked on thoroughly so that there will be no gaps,” said NAM president Rosy Chinunda, briefing Weekend Nation.

Some of the conditions suggested by Standard Bank were that NAM provides profiles of its administration members, teams and players as well as their mode of operations as a secretariat.

Standard Bank also asked NAM to give a breakdown of what they want covered in the sponsorship and how they are going to manage.

“They (Standard Bank), however, have given us hope and what they are asking for is professionalism in the way we will run the sponsorship. It’s proper and we are excited to work with them again. It is good news to netball. We will work hard not to lose this opportunity,” said Chinunda.

Matonga said the bank has never abandoned netball.

“Our door has always been open as we are committed to sponsoring netball again.

“It is up to them to meet the requirements of the sponsorship,” he said.

Apart from Airtel, no private company has been forthcoming to sponsor netball.

In another development, NAM has signed a pact with Airtel and Unicef to use netball players to reach out to orphans and other children struggling in education so that they can use sports to fulfil their dreams.
