State lawyer found dead in his house
Police have confirmed that senior State advocate in the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Trevor Mphalale was found hanging in his Area 51 house in Lilongwe yesterday, but said postmortem results were not yet out.
National Police spokesperson James Kadadzera said yesterday the police will investigate the sudden death of the lawyer.
He said: “It is true that the deceased was found hanging in his house in Area 51. The body has been taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital pending postmortem to establish cause of death.”
Ministry of Justice spokesperson Pirirani Masanjala has since described Mphalale’s death as tragic and shocking.
He said: “This tragic passing of our dear friend and beloved colleague is heartbreaking. He was a bright and hard working young man with a promising future in public service and as a legal practitioner.”
Writing on her Facebook page, Malawi Human Rights Commission member Chikondi Chijozi, who is also a lawyer with Southern African Litigation Centre, described Mphalale as a top lawyer who was full of life.
She said she worked with the deceased on a case involving a police officer Andrew Chagaga who was convicted of raping a 17-year-old girl this year
