The Association of People with Albinism in Malawi has asked communities in Traditional Authority (T/A) Chulu in Kasungu District to stop killing persons with albinism.

Apam Kasungu Chapter chairperson Caroline Zimkomola said this yesterday during an awareness meeting on the rights of persons with albinism organised by Kasungu District Peace and Unity Committee.

Her remarks follow the murder of a girl with albinism, Talandira Chirwa, at Mawawa Village in T/A Chulu in November last year. Six people are answering murder charges in the High Court relating to the case.

“It is here at Chulu where one of us was murdered because of someone’s lust for quickmoney. There is no way you will find money through killing people with albinism,” said Zimkomola.

Zimkomola: It is not fair for such cases to take long

She also asked the courts to speed up cases involving the killing of people with albinism.

“The courts must ensure that cases involving killings of people with albinism are expedited. It is not fair for such cases to take long to be concluded,” she said.

Group village head Kapatuka said it was suspicious that sellers of human tissues are easily arrested while the buyers are not.

“We wonder, suspected sellers of human tissues are easily arrested in the villages, but we have never heard about a suspected buyer being arrested. Are we saying these buyers are hard to locate?” he said.

Kasungu Community Policing coordinator Malifa Kapindira warned the communities against killing persons with albinism, saying there is no market for human bones in the country or elsewhere.

She said communities must be alert and tip the police on suspicious individuals and activities.

Among others, officials from the Department of Peace and National Unity, district council, chiefs and local peace committee structures attended the activity.
