Dausi queries Namalomba for speaking for DPP

Reinstated Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) publicity secretary Nicholas Dausi has wondered where Mangochi South East legislator Shadric Namalomba is drawing the mandate to speak for the party when a court order stopped the same.

The High Court of Malawi reinstated the Mwanza Central legislator as DPP member and publicity secretary.

But in a separate interview, DPP legal adviser Charles Mhango yesterday backed Namalomba’s statements, saying the positions of party spokesperson and publicity secretary were different.

Dausi: At no time did I ask to stop speaking

He said Dausi’s duties as a publicity secretary include publicising DPP activities such as political rallies while Namalomba’s duties include speaking on behalf of the party.

Said Mhango: “That situation arose when honourable Dausi went to the central committee and to the president in 2020 the moment MCP [Malawi Congress Party] won the fresh presidential elections and said now that MCP is back and as he was in MCP, he couldn’t speak against MCP.”

But Dausi insisted that the party publicity secretary automatically becomes the spokesperson after being elected at the party convention.

He also dismissed Mhango’s assertions, saying at no time did he ask to stop speaking on behalf of DPP.

Namalomba yesterday issued a statement stating that all DPP NGC members, including former president Peter Mutharika, are eligible to contest at the party’s convention.

On September 22 2023, Dausi obtained an injunction against the party’s decision to fire him from the part.
