Success catalysts beyond IQ—Part I

Listen to this article

Last week, we discussed the importance of paying attention to one’s other categories of intelligence beyond just the traditional IQ as we now know that up to 85 percent of contribution towards one’s success can be influenced by factors beyond IQ.

We listed other categories of intelligence beyond IQ, including EQ (Emotional Intelligence), MQ (Moral Intelligence), (NQ) Network Intelligence and BQ (Body Intelligence). We then shared details about EQ and MQ. Today, we will discuss NQ and BQ in detail and then conclude.

NQ is the measure of your ability to develop strong networks. You need to build wide and strong networks on multiple fronts. Networks are typically broken into three types: (a) Life networks (b) Social networks and (c) Work networks. The three play slightly different roles and are all important in your continuous personal and professional development. You need to grow and nurture all the three types of networks for you to excel in life and at work.

Life networks consist of family, extended family, lifelong friends including those that you went to school with and so on. Your social networks comprise the active friends whom you meet on a regular basis like once a month or more. These include neighbours, people you go to Church with, or even those that you meet on social networking platforms like Facebook, Twitter and similar media. The work networks comprise people you have met in jobs, including from previous jobs, current employment and even those from other companies that you interact with.

Your success is influenced by both the depth and breadth of the networks that you create and sustain on the three fronts. You need to do your best to expand the three types of networks but you also need to deepen some of those relationships. You need to constantly ask yourself how many of the contacts you have are of great value to you? How many would help or assist you? How many would do you a favour when in great need?

You must also invest in these networks and relationship. There is a powerful saying “Invest today in the relationships that you will need tomorrow.” A lot of people fail to utilise the full power and potential of relationships because they start building relationships and networks just hours if not moments before they need favours from those relationships. You need to build trust, rapport and connection over a long period of time before a person can be truly your acquaintance or friend or trusted network contact.

BQ or Body Intelligence is about the power and energy you get from your body. This is about how confident you feel, how strong you appear and how energetic you are. You can optimise your BQ by eating good food, exercising enough and having a good rest regularly. Constantly listen to the messages that your body is sending to you about your body and how you feel. This is important because the state of your body determines your self-confidence, feelings, thoughts, state of mind, and energy levels.

This also extends to how presentable you look. Mandela is famed for saying that one must dress for the occasion. If you are going for an executive event, dress like an executive. If you are going for a casual function, dress casually. If you are going for a ball, dress like you are going to a ball and the same if you are going for sports, to the Church, disco or for a walk. If you dress for the occasion, you will always feel confident and that will be noticed and registered by all the contacts you meet on the way. You will earn your respect by dressing for the occasion.

Over the last two weeks, we have discussed how your success is determined by additional factors beyond just IQ. Pay attention to your EQ, MQ, NQ and BQ for you to have the full package of all catalyst required to optimise your success. Good luck as you rise and shine with all the types of intelligence!
