Sulom backs partial 2020 fixtures release

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) says it has not released full fixtures for the 2020 TNM Super League season due to the uncertainty surrounding some international tournaments in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic.

Sulom on Sunday only released first-round fixtures ahead of the kick off this Saturday.

Bullets celebrate after winning the title

The top-flight league governing body’s general secretary Williams Banda on Monday said: “It is by design that we have not released full fixtures because it is still not clear as to when tournaments such as the Cosafa Cup will be held in view of the coronavirus outbreak.

“When the situation stabilises and CAF and Cosafa determine the way forward on its tournaments, then we will release the rest of the fixtures.”

And in a statement issued on Monday, Sulom states that the first-round fixtures are bound to change due to, among other things, the forthcoming presidential election and the effects of the coronavirus (Covid- 19) spurge.

Part of the statement reads: “Be mindful of the fact that we might have [presidential] elections, uncertainties surrounding the prevalent coronavirus which has affected the Fifa calendar. We also have to accommodate the Airtel Top 8 and FDH Cup which is likely to force us to make changes to the fixtures as well as fix mid-week matches.

“As usual, fixtures of the week will be confirmed 48 hours in advance at the latest.”

The Nomads will host Silver Strikers on May 2 while on June 21, the Central Bankers will host Bullets.

The fixture shows that the first-round will wind up on July 25. Meanwhile, Sulom has reminded all clubs to ensure that they pay their affiliation fees.
