Sulom in K11m stadium debt

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) is struggling to pay K11 million it  owes the Ministry of Youth and Sports as ground levy for the use of Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, it has been established.

The debt incurred from non-remittance of the ministry’s share from gate revenue, dates back to 2022.

A source confided in The Nation that until recently, the debt was K13 million, but the top-flight league runners made a part-payment of K2 million when Blantyre Water Board disconnected water supply at the facility after accumulating a K40 million bill.

“Sulom accumulated the debt due to non-remittance of the ministry’s gate revenue share from some matches,” said the source.

“What was happening is that Sulom would commit to pay the ministry its share through a cheque, but they could not pay and this happened over a number of matches.”

But while confirming that Sulom owes them “a certain” amount, the ministry’s spokesperson Macmillan Mwale could not be drawn to comment on the figures.

“What I can say is that we are engaging Sulom on the matter to see how best it can be addressed,” he said.

Mwale, however, admitted that they fail to meet operational costs due to the non-remittance of the funds.

“And it is only in games involving [FCB Nyasa] Bullets, [Mighty] Wanderers and Silver Strikers that we make substantial revenue, otherwise in other games, it does not meet the operational costs,” he said.

Sulom general secretary Williams Banda yesterday said he needed to find out on the issue. He had not done so by press time.
