Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has suspended all TNM Super League fixtures for this week due to Malawi National Football Team’s engangments during the Fifa international window.
There are two Fifa international windows for men’s football in June and July with the first one having already started on June 2 and will run up to June 10 while the second one falls between June 14 and July 6.
The Flames will from tomorrow to June 15 participate in the 2025 HollywoodBets Cosafa Cup in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
In a statement released yesterday, Sulom said it would revise the fixtures to factor in the changes.
The statement reads: “Games shall resume immediately after this international break. An updated fixture schedule will be communicated in due course.”
Sulom vice-general secretary Donnex Chilonga in an interview yesterday said while all clubs will be exempted during the current Fifa window, the league action will resume immediately after June 10 when the window ends.
He said: “As you can see, there are two factors that have made us to suspend the Super League fixtures.
“Firstly, the Fifa window which started on June 2 and will conclude on June 10. Secondly, the Flames involvement in the Cosafa Cup.
“So, what will happen is that once the window expires on June 10, all teams will resume playing their fixtures, except those that have contributed three or more players to the Flames squad, as per the leagues’ rules and regulations.”
Teams likely to be exempted from fixtures are FCB Nyasa Bullets, Mighty Wanderers and Silver since they have contributed three or more players each.
Chilonga said the second Fifa window will not have an impact on the league fixtures since Malawi will have returned from the Cosafa Cup by then.
Bullets are leading the log table with 18 points followed by crosstown rivals Mighty Wanderers at 16 points and newcomers Ekhaya FC on third with 13 points.
