Sunbird Tourism Malawi Limited has, after a three-year absence, resumed its annual inter-hotel sports day.

This year’s three-day games were held from Friday at Natural Resources College in Lilongwe.

The games were officially opened by Sunbird chief executive officer Roger Gardner who was in the company of his human resource manager Edward Chunga.

Addressing 300 employees who had gathered at NRC, Gardner said sports is good for health. He urged those taking part to give their all and take the games seriously.

“Sports is not about fun only, but also contributes a lot to a person’s health. I urge you to excel and enjoy yourself,” said Gardner before opening the ceremony with a penalty kick, which he missed.

Chunga who was responsible for the organisation of the three-day event said the objective of the sports day is to encourage a spirit of unity among Sunbird branches.

He said the games were an annual event in the past, but due to financial constraints, they could not organise them in the past three years.

“Now, we are back and have invested K14 million (about $35 000) in the event. It is something everyone looks forward to, but we had problems. It is not only about social gathering, but real competition because there are prizes at the end of the event,” said Chunga.

He said participants competed in tug-of-war, football, netball, volleyball, basketball, pool and other sports disciplines.
